Book Celebrations: Classic Books

I love reading a classic book with my children. There is a sense of nostalgia. It also allows us to have deep conversations about how literature has evolved over the years. They are exposed to language we may not typically use in modern life.

One of my favorite pieces of classic literature: Winnie the Pooh.
Winnie the Pooh is a classic and while there are several movies you could watch to celebrate, we opted for a tea party instead! We invited some friends over for tea, who were also finishing up this book. We also thoroughly enjoyed using Memoria Press's literature guide during this unit.

Honestly, this was the most fun book celebration we have ever done. Maybe it is because I loved this series so much as a child? I took out my grandmother's china and really went all out on these theme. We use Nilla wafer cookies for Winnie's honey cookies, made a bee hive out of donut holes and cut our bees to place on tooth pics around the hive and called them Kanga and Roo bites.

Another mom brought a veggie tray to represent Rabbit's vegetable garden and stick pretzels to represent Eeyore's house.

We made yummy ham and cheese sandwiches, portraying Christopher Robin's honey bread. We also had honey tea sticks, 1000 acres acorns (Hershey kisses and Nilla wafers), and other treats! Check out the video below.
Another classic that we love: The Wizard of Oz! We watched the classic version of this movie. You know, the one that used to come on television each Thanksgiving. Why was that a thing? Anyway, it was fun and they LOVED the older version of the movie.

I started this one with some Pepsi, as "oil" for the Tin Man. Then came two charcuterie boards: a fruit rainbow (complete with marshmallow clouds) and a yellow brick road with cheese and crackers. The grapes were for grass on either side.

You can't forget the witch's wand! We used donuts and kabob skewers, which was quite easy. We also used Bugles (remember these? I always had them around as a kid) to represent tornadoes in Kansas.

Dorthy's slippers was probably my favorite aspect of this movie night. My husband gets all the credit for those watermelon carved ruby slippers (yes, I know my tag says Ruby's slippers - I was tired y'all). We also had pasta and meatballs. The meatballs were for flying monkey poop (listen - when you have three boys, you lean in) and the pasta was for the scarecrow's straw.

"Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh my!" I think this phrase is the most recognized from this classic novel. We represented those animals using, you guessed it, animal cookies. We also used Hershey Kisses as the Tin Man's hat and smarties because that poor Scarecrow needed some brains.
There are so many other classics to share, and I will another day! But these were two of our biggest and most fun book celebrations!
Happy reading!
Jenna
